Greg Hopkins 16-PIECE Plus -- Jazz Orchestra

Greg Hopkins 16-PIECE Plus -- Jazz Orchestra
$15 / $10 students

The "Greg Hopkins 16-PIECE" all-star Jazz orchestra has been playing it's own brand of large ensemble jazz music for over 35 years now, all over New England and the Northeast.

The band has appeared in the Boston Globe Jazz Festival 5 times, the Newport Jazz festival, the Melrose Jazz Festival, the Cape Cod Jazz festival. They also play regularly at the local jazz clubs such as Ryles, Regatta Bar, Sahara Club, and the Pressroom.

There is some history here, and a whole lot of dues. These musicians have extensive road credentials, traveling and recording with such jazz luminaries as Buddy Rich, Woody Herman, Art Blakey, Stan Getz, Bill Evans, Tony Williams, Lonnie Smith, Lyle Lovett, and George Russell, just to name a few. An ensemble of this nature gathers together not without the idea of recreating some of the intense energy of those "road band" days. The maturity of ensemble playing and depth of improvisation is an obvious result of all that experience.

Band leader Hopkins comes to us from the great jazz mecca of Detroit Michigan. He cut his teeth playing with many local jazz bands, territory bands, and Motown acts, groups like the Temptations, the Supremes, Gladys Knight, Stevie Wonder, and hundreds of vibrant local Detroit musicians.

Touring with Billy Maxteds powerful four-horn jazz unit led to a two year stint, in 1972,with the Buddy Rich Band, as trumpet soloist and arranger/composer.

Hopkins contributed such staple charts as "Prelude to a Kiss," "Uncle Albert/ Admiral Halsey", "Waltz of the Mushroom Hunters," and the best selling "Nutville." This afforded national and worldwide travel, and recording opportunities. In 1974, Hopkins landed in Boston, presumably to rest for a year or two from the road, but signed on at the Berklee College of Music.

Hopkins' passion for writing for the jazz orchestra continued. Commissions and writing opportunities flourished over the past 30 years here in Boston and resulted in the formation of his quintet, nonet and the 16-Piece Jazz Orchestra. Greg is in demand as a guest soloist and conductor appearing with the Prague Radio Jazz Orchestra, the Reykjavik Jazz Orchestra, 29 years director of the Fairbanks Summer Arts Jazz Band, the Portland Jazz Orchestra. He was recently guest soloist and writer for the Air Force Band of Liberty. Also, Greg is thrilled to be a member of Tim Ray's original chamber-jazz trio "Tre Corda" along with cello legend Eugene Friesen.

The 16-Piece cd "Okavongo" on Summit Records got 4.5 stars from Downbeat and rave reviews all around from Jazz Times and All About Jazz. Also, his Quintet cd "Quintology", also on Summit, got 3.5 stars.

Featured in the 16-PIECE unit are such stellar jazz soloists as: Bill Pierce and Rick DiMuzio on tenor sax, Mark Pinto and Shannon LeClaire on alto saxes, Jeff Galindo and Rick Stepton on trombone, Tim Ray on piano, Jeff Stout, trumpet, and drummer Bob Tamagni.

Mehmet Polat Trio

Mehmet Polat Trio
Polat

Mehmet Polat - Oud, Composer - Band Leader
Pelin Ba_ar - Ney
Victor Sams - Ngoni (Small Kora), Hand Percussion

The Mehmet Polat Trio is a spiritual yet adventurous meeting of three virtuosos of magical instruments: Ney, Kora and Oud. With roots in the Ottoman, ancient Anatolian, Balkan and West African music traditions, the trio welcomes listeners with its musical authenticity. The original compositions are colored by daring improvisations and grooves, presented in an atmosphere of chamber music. The Mehmet Polat Trio invites its audiences on a sincere musical journey from the traditional past to an innovative present.

((- The music of the Mehmet Polat Trio was a cure for the soul with the sincerity and pure emotions of their songs. - Jazzkaar Festival, EE (LIVE)

- Introspective music that needed no flashy fanfare and which brought the audience into a world of peace, spaciousness, serenity, pleasure and beauty. - Jazzenzo, NL (LIVE)

The Mehmet Polat Trios debut album Next Spring was released in Autumn 2014 with Homerecords.be. This album has received many good reviews in the US, Canada, Netherlands, Germany, France and other European countries.

- In his elaborate compositions Mehmet Polat combines Anatolian, Middle Eastern music styles with African patterns. Masterfully he fuses the full range and capacity of ney, kora and ud together with their cultures and beyond. - Jazz n More Magazine, CH

- Next Spring is a touching encounter between three musical sensibilities that understand each other beyond cultural and linguistic divides. They sound as they have always been playing those three instruments together from a common emotional core, or a spiritual unity of talents. - Ethnotempos, FR

Mehmet Polat was born and raised in Urfa, Turkey, and studied Ottoman music in Istanbul. His new approach to Oud playing and his broadened vision towards music making brought him to Amsterdam in 2007, where he collaborated and experimented with many other musicians from around the world. After completing his conservatory studies of Indian music and self-studies of Persian, Arabic, Flamenco and other musical styles, Polat discovered the inner world and spiritual side of the African music. He was touched especially the timbre of Kora. With Kora as the earth element, Oud as space and Ney as air, the idea of Mehmet Polat Trio was born.

The members of the Trio had many enriching experiences playing their non-Western instruments as soloists and color musicians among artists from classical, jazz and other Western genres. In the unique constellation of the Mehmet Polat Trio, the Ney, Kora and Oud assume the main roles, with ample freedom to explore the full capacity of each instrument in the mix.

After a successful debut album, The Mehmet Polat Trio is moving forward to its path with a deeper sense of fusing those musical traditions, bringing together fresh ideas, letting in the new energies and as well new musicians. Pelin Ba_ar is the new Ney player in Trio. She has studied Classical Turkish Music and Composition in Istanbul, accompanied to the State Choir in Samsun, Turkey and recently moved to France, Paris. Victor Sams is the new Ngoni (small Kora) player of the trio. Victor was born and raised in Dutch Antilles, he grew up with reggae music from the Caribbean lands. He was always interested in re-bounding to his African roots. He went to Mali to study West African music and he infused his studies with his reggae traditions and brings them out through his Ngoni playing.

As the reviews declare, The Mehmet Polat Trio is more than a new combination of Turkish and African instruments. Polat thinks that music playing is a sincere and direct connection from heart to heart. In the music of the Trio, Polat fuses his artistic perfectionism with his ongoing spiritual paths, which appear as many deep expressions and many colors in his compositions. ((

Polats compositions are mostly in Jazz forms with lots of free space for each musician to improvise in. With a wide range of tone, makam from the Classic Turkish Music and the rhythm choices from Turkey, Balkan and World infused with African interpretation, these musicians are pushing their boundaries and moving forward in fusing the sound of this unique blend of instruments and the musical traditions from which they originate.

The Mehmet Polat Trio is currently preparing to record their second album 'Ask Your Heart', expected to be released in 2016.

Tom Dowd is a vocalist, guitarist, composer, and bandleader. He can perform solo or provide ensembles of up to 9 pieces in a variety of genres.

Tom's interest in music began at a young age, first manifesting itself in a kindergarten-era band featuring his younger siblings that sang acapella rock songs about diet and exercise. The fact that the instruments were imaginary did not affect the intensity of the performances. As he got older, he studied piano and then guitar, while feeding a growing appetite for music of diverse genres. After a decade of playing on and off in various rock ensembles, and years of lessons with Cleveland guitar legend Bob McGwire, he decided to apply to the Berklee College of Music to further his studies in other styles, especially jazz. Once there, he immediately demonstrated his skills as a composer, bandleader, and guitarist, pursuing his interests in styles as diverse as classical, jazz, hip hop, rock, and contemporary Middle Eastern. At Berklee he studied with guitar luminaries such as Jon Damian, David Tronzo, Randy Roos, Jon Wheatley, and David Fiuzcynski; other noted instructors include David Santoro, Victor Mendoza, Arjuan Ortiz-Vizcay, and Ed Saindon. In the Spring of 2008, Tom graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Professional Music. He still resides in Boston where he leads his original group, Strange Changes and performs live jazz.
