Perhaps the most musically-diverse Latin music group to emerge in Massachusetts, Grupo Yagua boasts an extensive repertoire including Latin, Cuban, Puerto Rican, Brazilian, Jazz, Salsa, Plena, Bomba, Bachata, Merengue, Pop, Bolero, among other Latin-based genres.

Known for their contagious renditions of classic Latin songs, Grupo Yagua received its name – Yagua- from the large leafs of the palm tree. The yagua was used by Puerto Ricans, Dominicans and Cubans in the early twentieth century to build roofs over their homes, corral their chickens and for other important domestic activities.

Grupo Yagua usually performs classic and traditional songs from Puerto Rico, Cuba and Dominican Republic from the 1930’s to the 1970’s and adds a modern twist. In addition, the group plays Salsa, Merengue as well as extremely contagious and danceable music like Parrandas, Truyas, Plena, Guaracha and Aguinaldos.

Griot singer, guitarist and storyteller Boubacar Diabate from Mali comes from the Mandinka lineage and has combined traditional rhythms with modern influences to create his own style of contemporary Malian Griot music. Singing in Bambara, Boubacar and his group "Samba Lolo" will create an evening that spans the full spectrum of Traditional to Contemporary Malian music from West Africa.
