Hanna Noh Piano Quartet

Hanna Noh Piano Quartet "Cantabile"
Noh

Hanna Noh - Piano, Violin
Carlos Capacho - Quatro
Orlando Retana - Drums
Carlos Sulbaran - Bass

Hanna Noh has always been fascinated with chords. A classically trained pianist, violinist and composer, she knew from the start her mission was to play music around the world. Raised in South Korea, the first time she learned her scales and arpeggios, it was clear music would be her primary mode of transportation.  And its taken her everywhere from South Koreas Cheong Wa Dae (their White House) to Berklee College of Music and places in between - all with the intent of accomplishing a greater goal: striking a chord in others.  From when I was really young my mom told me I've been saying this," she explained. And still it hasn't changed."

Inspired by connection through music and her relationship with God, Hanna began her formal education in 2001, and spent a decade and a half refining her skills. A recent Berklee College of Music graduate (Magna Cum Laude) with a Professional Degree in Piano Performance, there she contributed to a number of musicals including Legally Blonde and City of Angels, playing to an audience of 1,000 per show. Prior to Berklee she studied classical piano and violin at Hyupsung Universityand Baekseok Universitys graduate program South Korea and Hannover University of Music, Drama and Media Germany, mastering a diverse repertoire consisting of Latin, gospel, jazz and more.

Hanna isn't just skilled in Western genres she also has extensive experience in world music. In 2013 she performed world pop for the Rhythm of the Universe show at Boston Commons, drawing over 4,000 people. Then, in 2016 she played piano in the World Music Concert put on by MIT's Music and Theatre Arts department; and handled keyboard duties for Master Guo, a concert that fused Chinese woodwinds with classical western.  She also worked on Hong Kong TVs documentary of Yazhi Guo, and lent her talents to major Korean broadcasting companies, including MBC, KBS, SBS, and Mnet.

In addition to being a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and composer, Hanna's other passion is teaching.  "I've always felt as though I had the obligation to share the knowledge and expertise Ive gained throughout the years with the less fortunate. Those who didnt have the same opportunities I had growing up, those whose families werent able to afford proper education, and those who had to sacrifice their dreams to support their families in moments of need."

Bruce Bartlett Trio

The streets are paved with guitar players in this age-old town. You can see them as you walk around -- their tuning pegs and whammy bars sticking up through the pavement, their hands frozen in the shape of a Jimmy Page lick. The ones left standing tend to be pretty good. And then there's Bruce Bartlett. It's no exaggeration to say that Bruce is a pillar of jazz-funk-blues guitar culture in this intensely jazzy, funky, bluesy place.

Albino Mbie is an internationally award-winning musician born in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, a country in southern Africa known for its rich musical and cultural heritage.  A Guitarist, Vocalist, Composer and Sound Engineer, fueled by the resourcefulness and determination that has always characterized the people of Mozambique, he built his very first guitar at the age of sixteen from a 5-liter can of oil, some scrap wood, and constructed strings out of electrical cords.

Drawn to the sounds of neighborhood street musicians in Maputo, Albino began to play in a number of local bands. As with his innovative self-made guitar, Albino combined ground-breaking styles with diverse elements into his music and realized early on that in order to develop his talent, he knew he would need to venture forth to experience new sounds, places, and cultures.  While studying Music Education and Performance at the Universidade Eduardo Mondlane in Mozambique, he learned of the Berklee College of Music in Boston, USA, where he knew he would be able to expand his musical horizons.

Mbie was among the very first students to receive a full scholarship to Berklee through the African Scholars program and in 2009, he settled in Boston, Massachusetts to continue his studies in the US.  At Berklee College of Music, he was exposed to a variety of influences, but chose to go deeper into the roots of jazz and expand upon his knowledge of music. He was selected to participate in the prestigious Berklee Global Jazz Institute, directed by Danilo Perez along with the leadership of residency teachers to include Joe Lovano, John Patitucci, Marco Pignataro and Terri Lyne Carrington. The Institute emphasizes an artists original vision in jazz and has been instrumental in guiding Albino Mbie to find his own unique voice within the art form.  However, Mbie still felt the absence of his own Mozambican traditions in his music so with the help of his mentors, Richard Bona and Lionel Loueke, two of todays most prominent African musicians in the United States, he began to bridge that gap.

Today, Mbie's original music succeeds in combining many disparate parts into an organic whole. It incorporates his musical experiences from Mozambique, the U.S., and many other places around the world, combining rhythmic patterns and musical concepts to create a unique Afro-Pop and Moz-Jazz sound. Albino Mbie will always continue to combine and capture the energies of different musical traditions to create a unified and original musical style.  A graduate of the Berklee College of Music in Performance, Production Music and Sound Engineering with a  Minor in Acoustics and Electronics in 2013.  Albino Mbie released his first album titled "Mozambican Dance" in July 2013 with 12 original compositions, collaborating with musicians from 16 countries in 2014.

Album awards:

  • First Place for "International Song Writing Competition" in the category of World Music (USA)
  • "Ngoma Mozambique" Awarded "Revelation Prize"  of the year of 2013/14
  • Nomination by "Radio France International" (RFI ) 2014 for Best Upcoming African Artist.
