Mr. Nick and the Dirty Tricks

Mr. Nick and the Dirty Tricks

After winning several awards including Blues Audience Magazine's "Blues Band of the Year" Mr. Nick & the Dirty Tricks is quickly emerging as one of New England's hottest Blues acts. They have been named one of the top 20 bands in Boston (sandwiched right between the Dropkick Murphy's and The James Montgomery band) and their record "Oh Wow" was named one of the top 25 records in the country for 2012 by Alternate Root Magazine. They have been taking the Blues world by storm and winning over converts everywhere they play. Performing an eclectic selection of early Jump Blues, lesser known Chicago Blues nuggets and sure-fire originals, their high energy show never disappoints. Fronted by powerhouse vocalist and unorthodox harp player Nick David and featuring some of the region's top players, this band's high energy shows and expert musicianship leave the audience always ready for more.

Bruce Bartlett Trio

The streets are paved with guitar players in this age-old town. You can see them as you walk around -- their tuning pegs and whammy bars sticking up through the pavement, their hands frozen in the shape of a Jimmy Page lick. The ones left standing tend to be pretty good. And then there's Bruce Bartlett. It's no exaggeration to say that Bruce is a pillar of jazz-funk-blues guitar culture in this intensely jazzy, funky, bluesy place.

Laszlo Gardony Quartet

Laszlo Gardony is a critically acclaimed artist who has brought his soulful improvisations and compositions to audiences in 25 countries. Winner of the Great American Jazz Piano Competition, Gardony has been called "a pianist worthy of praise within the highest pantheon of performers" by Jazz Review.com and "a great pianist" by Dave Brubeck. He has released 10 albums, leading groups that included Dave Holland, Miroslav Vitous, Mick Goodrick, Jamey Haddad, Bob Moses, Yoron Israel, John Lockwood among others.

Gardony's new solo piano release, "Clarity" (Sunnyside) features ten original compositions which he improvised during an uninterrupted 49-minute session. His previous CD Signature Time (Sunnyside) features his trio of twelve years, bassist John Lockwood and drummer Yoron Israel, as well as multi-instrumentalist/vocalist, Stan Strickland.

Gardony has been praised for his "fluid pianism" by The New York Times and for his "uniformly high quality of compositions" by All About Jazz Magazine.

JazzTimes has called him "one of contemporary music's truly original voices" and "a formidable soloist who lives in the moment."

As a sideman, Gardony recorded and toured extensively with Yoron Israel's High Standards Quartet, The Wayfaring Strangers, Shelley Neill and Garrison Fewell. He appeared with the David Fathead Newman Quintet at numerous jazz
festivals. Gardony has been featured with the Boston Pops, the Utah Symphony and The Smithsonian Institute's "Beyond Category" Traveling Duke Ellington Exhibit. He was also commissioned to arrange his original compositions for
The Danish Radio Big Band.

Gardony has been living in Boston for the past thirty years, where he is a Professor of Piano at Berklee College of Music.

Reviews of "Clarity" (Sunnyside SSC 4014, Year: 2013)

"The album is unusually intimate, as if we're overhearing a great pianist's most private musings" Bill Beuttler, JazzTimes

The album as a whole is like hearing a precious artifact from a time either long past or, like the best improvisations, as-yet unseen Chris Barton, Los Angeles Times

Gardonys fingers seem wired to the place where thoughts have not yet formed into speech, from a deep well of emotion and intellect. Steve Horowitz, PopMatters

Each of the ten electrifying improvisations, full of rhythmic daring and unfiltered emotional honesty, hits you square in the face and demand attention. Rather like the famous footage of Picasso at work in his studio, Gardonys strokes appear effortless. Fred Grand, Jazz Journal, UK

"Tomoko Ozawa is a fresh voice from Japan, whose music combines lyricism with European contemporary classical music and rhythmic elements of Jazz. Her recent project of setting the poetry of Emily Dickinson to music is truly original and is an utterly fitting project for this talented pianist/singer. Listening to her sound, you could think that Dickinson's words were intended as lyrics for Miss Ozawa's scores." -Alain Mallet, Pianist/composer/producer

Berklee College of Music

Berklee College of Music

Latin America VIVE Music Festival

Berklee College of Music Latin America VIVE Music Festival at RylesThe first edition of "Latin America Vive" Music Festival first took place at the Berklee Performance Center in October of 2013. We are now presenting the same program at Ryles Jazz club on APRIL 30th at 9PMStudents and faculty members of Berklee College of Music come together to celebrate and showcase the vitality of Latin American music today.

“We’re excited about this festival because it was an initiative brought to us by the students, so we didn’t hesitate to jump on board and develop the idea” says Sofia Rei, Artistic Producer and Berklee Faculty. "We want to showcase relevant, original, contemporary Latin American music developed by the creative spirits of this young generation".

Adds Latin Music Studies Faculty Advisor Oscar Stagnaro: “We have always understood the importance of Hispanic Heritage in our community, for this reason we have developed a minor in Latin American Studies and several programs that allow students to explore Latin music.”

The festival will showcase different expressions of contemporary Latin American music in all its rich and diverse musical styles. From salsa to Andean music, from boleros and chacareras, to Latin jazz and fusion, the festival has created a lot of hype and anticipation by the Berklee community. It will shine a spotlight on student performance talent and new compositions, including an 11-piece band created specifically for this event. Students were encouraged to submit their own pieces and audition for the band. The Latin faculty members and the Latin American Music Business Association (LAMBA), hope this initiative becomes part of the Latin Music Culture Celebration (LMCC) and Hispanic Heritage Month on a yearly basis.

ABOUT BERKLEE COLLEGE OF MUSIC
Berklee College of Music was founded on the revolutionary principle that the best way to prepare students for careers in music is through the study and practice of contemporary music. For more than half a century, the college has evolved to reflect the state of the art of music and the music business, leading the way with the world’s first baccalaureate studies in jazz, rock, electric guitar, film scoring, songwriting, turntables, electronic production, and more than a dozen other genres and fields of study. With a diverse and talented student body representing 96 countries, and alumni who have collectively won more than 250 Grammys and Latin Grammys, Berklee is the world's premier learning lab for the music of today—and tomorrow.

ABOUT THE LATIN AMERICAN STUDIES MINOR
Latin music and related studies are at the core of Berklee, engaging the entire college community, from academics to concerts and special events. Boasting an international student population, renowned faculty with expertise in a range of Latin music specialities, and alumni leaders in the Latin music industry—as evidenced by the more than 50 Latin Grammys to date as well as their prominence as performers, producers, and engineers across the globe—the college has staked a serious role in the Latin music of today and the future.
