Paa Seck Diery Band plays all original M'Balax music. Based on the traditional rhythms of the Sabar Drum Orchestra, M'balax is the popular club and dance music of Senegal, West Africa. Somerville-based singer Celia Slatterys original music weaves elements of jazz, pop and folk/rock with perceptive lyrics inspired by artists like Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen. The songs touch upon broad-ranging themes including friendship and finding hope in troubled times. Celia also covers music by songwriters ranging from George Gershwin to Adele. In performance, she provides context for the songs with stories and humor. Celia will be joined for this show by members of her voice studio, TBA.

Dimuzo is a quartet of musicians from 4 different countries, Bulgaria, Italy, Canada, and United States with varied experience in jazz, world music, and classical, who together create a contemporary interpretation of musical traditions from Europe, North Africa, North America, and elsewhere. Each member of the ensemble, being dedicated in their own respective fields, bring a wealth of experience and international professionalism to the project. Playing repertoire from traditional Bulgarian folk Gadulka/Accordion, duets to unique approaches to Jazz standards, Baroque, Latin, or Original compositions, Dimuzo surely offers something new to the musical ear.

About the music;
At Ryles on July 18, the band will be performing music from Bulgaria to Bach, with some pleasant surprises in between. From the rich tradition of Bulgarian folk, their national instrument Gadulka is paired with Accordion in performance of rhythmically dense dance tunes of the region. On the modern side of the spectrum, electric mandolin and keyboards, with upright bass and drums/percussion explore improvisational approaches to to new/old music. A Jazz standard, for example, driven by Moroccan style rhythms, & melody played on slide mandolin, would not be unheard of. With the many common denominators of World music seamlessly intertwined in an improvisational setting, new sounds are to be expected.

Boston's DIANE BLUE has the "whole package" - she is a strong vocalist, skillful harmonica player and a crowd pleasing entertainer. Voted Outstanding Female Singer in The Blues Audience 2011 Readers’ Poll, Ms. Blue is a soulful and sassy performer with a strong, confident attack and energetic delivery, serving up her own spin on soul, blues and R&B.

Ms. Blue won the 2010 Massachusetts Blues Challenge, earning the honor of competing at the 2011 International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tennessee. She was nominated for "Best Female Singer" in the 2010 Blues Audience Readers Poll, "Best Blues/R&B Act" and "Best Female Vocalist in 2007 by the Providence Phoenix and also nominated "Best Local Blues Act" by Motif Magazine in 2007.

Ms. Diane Blue has played harmonica and/or sung with guitarist extraordinaire, Ronnie Earl, as well as international performers Luther Guitar Jr. Johnson (former sideman for Muddy Waters), Big Jack Johnson (of Clarksdale, Mississippi) and Irma Thomas (the Soul Queen of New Orleans). Juke joint legend Big Jack Johnson dubbed Ms. Blue “A Monster” on the harp after she performed as his guest star at Red's Lounge in Clarksdale, Mississippi.

Ms. Blue continues to tour internationally as well as performing in the USA.
