Bruce Bartlett Trio
The streets are paved with guitar players in this
age-old town. You can see them as you walk around -- their tuning
pegs and whammy bars sticking up through the pavement, their hands
frozen in the shape of a Jimmy Page lick. The ones left standing
tend to be pretty good. And then there's Bruce Bartlett. It's no
exaggeration to say that Bruce is a pillar of jazz-funk-blues guitar
culture in this intensely jazzy, funky, bluesy place.

ÑAWI - Music from Ecuador
Mariela Condo
- Vocals
Yuriana Sobrino
- Percussion & vocals
Alex Alvear
- Bass, guitar, keyboards &
vocals
Somer O'Brien
- Keyboards, accordion &
vocals
Roberto Cachimuel . Rumi Cachimuel
. Curi Cachimuel - Andean
flutes, violin, mandolin, bandola
Ñawi is a unique collaboration
between established Ecuadorian musicians that brings together three
separate projects into a new performing ensemble. This collaboration
joins the talents and music from multi-instrumentalists Roberto,
Rumi and Curi Cachimuel, members of the 2005 NAMMY Award Winners
YARINA, the critically-acclaimed singer MARIELA CONDO and Boston-based
musician and arts promoter ALEX ALVEAR. The group also incorporates
the talents of Boston-based musicians Somer O'Brien on keyboards,
vocals and accordion and Yuriana Sobrino on vocals and percussion.
Ñawi, which in the Native-Ecuadorian
Kichwa language means "Faces", presents a new and contemporary
vision of Ecuadorian music. The majority of the music is all-original
and it offers a unique approach to traditional Ecuadorian music,
faithful to its age-old roots but incorporating contemporary musical
elements. Ñawi is a celebration of Ecuadorian culture and
a wonderful opportunity to witness a wide range of musical styles
from a part of the world that has had very little exposure in the
region.

Taylor Ho Bynum Sextet
Taylor Ho Bynum - cornet
Jim Hobbs - alto
saxophone
Bill Lowe - bass
trombone
Mary Halvorson - guitar
Ken Filiano - bass
Tomas Fujiwara - drums
Critics have called cornettist and composer Taylor
Ho Bynum "a young brass master and compelling composer"
(Jon Garelick, Boston Phoenix), "a remarkable writer, improviser
and bandleader" (Troy Collins, AllAboutJazz.com) and "one
of the most exciting figures in jazz's new power generation"
(Steve Dollar, Time Out Chicago). The Chicago Reader's Peter
Margasak adds, "Taylor Ho Bynum cemented his reputation as
one of the most compelling and progressive trumpeters and bandleaders
currently active, at home in every corner of the creative-music map."
Bynum's expansive resume includes collaborations with both
his contemporaries and legendary figures alike, most notably the
iconic saxophonist/composer Anthony Braxton, with whom he has performed
and recorded extensively over the past decade.
For the past five years, Bynum's Sextet has been his primary
working ensemble, releasing two albums and performing throughout
the world, including headlining performances at Jazz Em Agosto (Portugal),
Taktlos Festival (Switzerland), Kerava Festival (Finland), and the
Vision Festival (NYC). The group's 2007 debut, The Middle Picture
(Firehouse 12 Records), was called "the shape of jazz to come"
(Philip Clark, The Wire, UK), and "a measured, highly intelligent
project that points the way forward for jazz as the decade wanes…four
stars" (Richard Cook and Brian Morton, The Penguin Guide to
Jazz Recordings). The 2008 follow-up, Asphalt Flowers Forking Paths
(hatOLOGY Records) was similarly critically acclaimed, described
as "a momentous and altogether brilliant album" (Chris
May, AllAboutJazz.com) "one of the essential ensembles in modern
jazz…five stars" (Thierry Lepin, Jazzman Magazine, France).
Now Bynum introduces the newest iteration of the sextet, adding Jim
Hobbs (alto saxophone), Bill Lowe (bass trombone), and Ken Filiano
(bass) to the core trio of the leader's cornet with Mary Halvorson
(guitar) and Tomas Fujiwara (drums). Though Hobbs, Lowe, and Filiano
will be new to the group, their musical relationships with Bynum
stretch back over fifteen years. The ensemble brings together some
of the finest musicians from the Boston and New York scenes, demonstrating
a remarkable diversity of backgrounds and generations, with members
of the group born in every decade from the 1950s to the '80s.
Bynum also just received a 2010 New Jazz Works Commissioning Grant
from Chamber Music America and the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation
to write a book of original compositions for the sextet, which will
be premiered this fall.

Diane Blue and Friends
Boston's DIANE BLUE Diane Blue has the whole package
-- she is a strong vocalist, skillful harmonica player and a crowd-pleasing
entertainer. Ms. Blue is a soulful and sassy performer who delivers
the goods vocally and through her harp playing. Juke joint legend
Big Jack Johnson dubbed Ms. Blue "A Monster" on the harp
after she performed as his guest star at Red's Lounge in Clarksdale,
Mississippi. She belts out a funky soul tune, then she'll sing a
sweet ballad, just before she blows you away on the blues harp. "When
she gets her harp & mic going, the language is hard hitting blues.
Strong, confident and tasteful" says Domenic Forcella of Blues
Beat. She "simmers with sensuality," declares Bob Gulla
of the Phoenix. "A classy, sleek, and intensely confident showcase
of an elegant voice with a penchant for the blues," declares
Don Dimuccio of Motif Magazine.
COLLABORATORS
Ms. Blue has sung and played harmonica with international blues performers
Ronnie Earl, Roberto Morbioli, Sherman Robertson and Luther Guitar
Jr. Johnson (former Muddy Waters sideman), as well as Big Jack Johnson
from Clarksdale, Mississippi and Irma Thomas (the Soul Queen of New
Orleans). Ms. Blue performs regularly with notably accomplished musicians,
the likes of saxman Amadee Castenell (who tours with Elvis Costello
and Allen Toussaint), drummer Liviu Pop (who tours internationally
with bluesman Lucky Peterson), past and present members of the Duke
Robillard band and Roomful of Blues.
