The Compaq Big Band showcases the power of 14 horns, a cookin rhythm section, the incomparable Rebecca Holtz on vocals, and terrific instrumental soloists. Formed in 1975, the ensemble is one of the longest continuously operating full-size big bands in New England. They perform over three dozen times a year, for a diverse range of clients and events across the Greater Boston, Greater Worcester, Rhode Island, and Southern New Hampshire regions. A Fundraiser for Lung Cancer Research

Event Time: 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM
Admission: $25 per person, proceeds to benefit lung cancer research at Massachusetts General Hospital

SigFest 2012, a musical fundraiser, will take place at Ryles on Saturday, November 3, 2-5 pm. The event features a diverse mix of locally based talents and genres, including the a cappella sounds of Spectrum Reflections, the poetic folk and magnificent finger picking of Craig Sonnenfeld, the intricate harmonies of jazz vocalist Kris Adams, and the fabulous groove of Lee Adler, Regie Gibson, Herman Johnson, and Steve Lamb.

The event will raise money for the Sig Adler Lung Cancer Research Fund at Mass General. Sig Adler was an attorney who died in November 2007, just ten months after he was diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer. Dr. Jennifer Temel, who treated Sig, will speak about the latest research on lung cancer at MGH. Marco Pignataro is a multi-talented saxophone player, composer and educator from Bologna, Italy . Marco maintains a very active international schedule of concerts, recordings and clinics and he has shared stages with artists such as Eddie Gomez, JoAnne Brakeen, Danilo Pérez, Billy Hart, Jon Faddis, John Patitucci, Ben Street and George Garzone, amongst many others. Together with Danilo Perez, Marco currently leads the Berklee Global Jazz Institute (BGJI), the premiere jazz center of musical creativity at Berklee College of Music in Boston. His latest CD "Sofia's Heart", was produced by jazz legend Eddie Gomez and recorded with a stellar group including Gomez and Billy Drummond. Also a member of the Eddie Gomez Quintet, Marco's compositions and playing is featured in the quintet recently released CD "Per Sempre" for BFM Jazz.

Award-winning Brazilian bassist, Braulio Araujo, has volunteered to join an all-star cast at Ryles while visiting in Boston, by presenting his original repertoire with CONTEMPO that reflects his own roots. Araujo is renown for his compositions, arrangements and vocals. He currently resides in Brazil where he also produces in his own studio and the result is astounding. His newest CD "PONTE" (Eng. Trans.) "BRIDGE" features his own compositions, which highlights the song "De Baixo do Frevo" (Eng. Trans.) "Below the Frevo", awarded Second Place in the category "Frevo de Rua" at the 2012 Festival de Musica Carnival in Recife, in addition to "Best Arrangement" for "SOLAR", a beautiful rendition of the classic Brazilian instrumental composition by Leo and William Magalhaes, both on this new CD. We will also hear his spin on the music of the greatest names in Brazilian music such as "Frevo" by Egberto Gismonte, "Ninho de Vespa" by Dori Caymmi and" Vera Cruz" by Milton Nascimento, among others, which makes this special guest presentation of the highest musical and cultural quality in contemporary Brazilian music.

The George Lernis Jazz Quartet was formed in 2011 in preparation of the recording "The Shapes of Nature". The band includes two of Lernis fellow Longy graduates, bassist Mark Zaleski and saxophonist Scott Boni, as well as Lefteris Kordis; Lernis' teacher/mentor and colleague. Having played together in various ensembles around Boston, the foursome comes together as a tightly knit unit that perfectly complement each other in the realization of the leaders idiosyncratic compositions. The album was recorded on june 1st, 2011 and was released in july of the same year.

Juan Pérez Rodríguez is presenting his new project "Juan Pérez Rodríguez Quartet", approaching flamenco and mediterranean sounds from a very distinctive perspective, and incorporating Jazz improvisation on it. The Flamenco raised musician, and also Jazz and Classical player is extracting the sonorities from Andalucia, and setting them in present times by using wings of improvisation. His concepts can be seen multiples ways, still keeping the originality.
